Furlonteer Q&A with Lily Freake

Please could you introduce yourself to us and how you came to hear about Furlonteer?

My name is Lily, I’m 23 and I work in Business Development for a fundraising technology company in London. Like many of us during this time, I have been furlough. However, one day whilst scrolling through Instagram, I saw an advert for Furlonteer and signed up straight away.

What made you want to want to sign up as a Furlonteer?

I wanted to use my experience to have a positive impact and be creative in some way. I’ve always been passionate about supporting the charity sector, and now is a great time to do what you can!

Could you tell us a little about the charity you’ve been matched with and your role in helping them?

I am working alongside The Little Surprises Company who are organising a virtual festival all in aid of London Food Banks. I’ve been working on securing sponsorship and engagement for the festival; communicating with some amazing and lovely brands to support the food, wellness and creativity festival on Sunday 24th May.

Which new skills has this experience given you?

This experience has enhanced my strategic communication skills, as well as sparking my creativity. It’s also given me a great insight into social media marketing, as well as brand engagement. All excellent skills for future career development!

What impact do you feel it’s had on your experience of being Furloughed, and are you likely to continue volunteering after it ends?

Furlonteer has allowed me to channel my energy into something positive and productive. It’s boosted my confidence in so many ways, and in a time when things are very uncertain, it’s given me purpose. I will definitely continue volunteering once this project is over!

Could you give any advice or tips to other people considering signing up to Furlonteer?

Absolutely go for it! Don’t worry, it’s won’t take up all your time, you’ll be using existing skills (and gaining new ones), there’s nothing scary about it. And above all, have fun while you support some incredible companies and causes through this difficult period!
