Furlonteer Q&A with Clare Gould
Please could you introduce yourself to us and how you came to hear about Furlonteer? I'm Clare and I have been on furlough from my job as a Marketing Coordinator since the middle of April. My partner saw details of Furlonteer online and thought it looked interesting and something I could get involved with.
What made you want to want to sign up as a Furlonteer? Being furloughed is a strange experience - you suddenly have nothing to do and you have to find ways to fill your day. The nice weather has helped for sure but when I read about Furlonteer it made so much sense - there are lots of people with nothing to do and lots of charities who need help. It was a no-brainer to submit my details and see what happened.
Could you tell us a little about the charity you’ve been matched with and your role in helping them? I have been matched with WaterHarvest and I'm using my knowledge of Digital Marketing - mainly social media - to help them.
Which new skills has this experience given you? I'm not sure about any new skills yet because it's only been a couple of weeks but I have really enjoyed learning about a brand new company and how they work, as well as using my brain again. It's as if I had forgotten what I know and what I'm capable of and this is reminding me and giving me some confidence that I didn't even realise I had lost.
What impact do you feel it’s had on your experience of being Furloughed, and are you likely to continue volunteering after it ends? The impact has been nothing but positive - not only do I get the benefit of using my skills, keeping my brain active and having something to do on a regular basis, but I am doing all of this with the knowledge that I am helping and could really make a difference. I am incredibly likely to continue after it ends - I have volunteered in the past but never remotely from home so it's good to know that's possible.
Could you give any advice or tips to other people considering signing up to Furlonteer?
Yes, I'd give some very simple advice - go for it!
